Owner and operations manager

Daniel J. Bloss

Roughly a decade in private security, most of it spent building the unglamorous parts — post orders, patrol routes, dispatch procedure, and the reports that prove any of it happened.

Why I own this company

I spent years running other people's security operations across Arizona — as an area manager and on the business development side — and the same thing broke every time. Not the officers. The paperwork. A client would call asking whether anyone had actually driven their property on Tuesday, and too often the honest answer was that nobody could say for certain.

That is a solvable problem, and it is mostly a management problem rather than a technology one. It gets solved with clear post orders, a chain of command that a new officer can understand on their first shift, supervisors who actually inspect, and a reporting standard nobody is allowed to skip because it is inconvenient at 4 a.m.

Templar exists because I wanted to run a company where that standard is the floor rather than the sales pitch. Sky Watch exists because there is a whole category of property — washes, acreage, rooflines, back lots — that a patrol vehicle simply cannot cover well, and now there is a legal, licensed way to cover it.

What I do day to day

I am not a name on a letterhead. Operations manager is a working title here.

  • I walk every new site personally, usually at night, before we quote it
  • I write the post orders and the report template for each contract
  • I hire and train every officer who wears our patch
  • I review incident reports before they reach a client
  • I run supervisor inspections and take the after-hours escalation calls
  • I answer the phone when a client has a problem with us

Background

The short version of about ten years in the field.

Before security

Civil Air Patrol

Served as a senior member, finishing as a Second Lieutenant. It is where I first learned how aviation discipline works — checklists, briefings, radio protocol, and the habit of debriefing every flight whether or not anything went wrong. Sky Watch runs on that habit.

Field years

Officer, mobile patrol, and standing posts

Distribution centers and trailer storage yards, apartment and retail patrols, standing guard coverage, and overnight mobile routes. Everything I ask an officer to do, I have done on a bad night in July.

Management

Area Manager and Business Development Manager

Ran the Arizona operation for a statewide contract security firm. Built patrol programs from scratch, wrote SOPs and site-specific post orders, set up dispatch procedure, and stood up the supervisor inspection and photo checkpoint requirements that our reporting system grew out of.

Also

Hiring, scheduling, and training

Recruiting, onboarding, officer training, scheduling across multiple sites, and payroll planning. Running a guard company is a staffing business as much as a security business, and the companies that forget that are the ones whose officers stop showing up.

Now

Owner and Operations Manager, Templar Protection Services

Ground operations out of Maricopa and Chandler, plus the Sky Watch aerial division. Hiring unarmed officers, armed officers, remote pilots, and sales.

How I run it

Four commitments. I will hold myself to these in front of a client or an officer.

The report tells the truth
If an officer missed a checkpoint, that shows in your report. I would rather lose a contract over an honest record than keep one on a fake one.
Officers get trained and paid
Undertrained, underpaid guards are why this industry has the reputation it has. Our pay is competitive on purpose, and training is on the clock.
We say no to bad fits
If your site doesn't need an armed post, a drone, or as many hours as you were about to buy, I will say so during the walk.
